Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe

TermDefinition
Light-year The distance light travels in one year
Fusion Creation of energy by joining the nuclei of two hydrogen atom to form helium.
Convection Heat transfer in a gas or liquid by the circulation of currents from one region to another.
Corona The outer layer of the sun's atmosphere
Sunspot A cooler darker spot appearing periodically on the sun's photosphere.
Solar wind A stream of electrically charged particles produced by the sun's corona.
Parallax An apparent shift in the position of an object when viewed from different positions.
Nebula A large cloud of dust and gas that can break apart into smaller pieces and form stars.
Neutron Star May occur when a supergiant collapses to a very dense core.
Black hole An object whose gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape.
Main Sequence The stage in which stars produce energy through the fusion of hydrogen into helium.
Doppler Effect An observed change in the frequency of a wave when the source or observer is moving
