CSRH Rock Cycle

Rock cycle, weather, and erosion

TermDefinition
sedimentary rock rocks formed from particles deposited by water and wind, then compacted and cemented together.
sediment small solid pieces of material that comes from rock or living things
erosion running water or wind carries away rock fragments and sediment
deposition the process by which sediment settles out of the water or wind
compaction the process that presses sediments together
cementation the process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and "glue" particles of sediment together
clastic a sedimentary rock the forms when rock fragments are squeezed together
organic a sedimentary rock the forms when the remains of plants and animals are deposited in layers
chemical sedimentary rock a sedimentary rock the forms when dissolved minerals crystallize
intrusive igneous rocks that cool slowly within the Earth
extrusive igneous rocks that cool quickly at the above the surface
igneous rock any rock that forms from magma or lava
metamorphic rock any rock that has changed form due to heat and pressure
foliated metamorphic rocks that have parallel layers or bands
nonfoliated metamorphic rocks that do not have layers or bands , the mineral grains are arranged randomly.
chemical weathering type of weathering due to a change in the rocks chemistry such as acid rain
physical weathering type of weathering due to abrasion from water, plants or animals, or sand carried by wind,
weathering the breakdown of rock
erosion the movement of particles of rock or sediment by moving water or wind.
freeze - thaw cycle when water gets into cracks in rock, freezes, expands, melts, and then the process repeats.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
