The structure of the human digestive system

| the mouth | in the mouth the food is chewed and mixed with saliva |
| the oesophagus | the oesophagus is the tube that carries food to the stomach |
| the liver | the liver produces a substance called bile which helps break down fat |
| the stomach | in the stomach the food is churned and mixed with acid and digestive juice |
| the pancreas | the pancreas produces digestive enzymes |
| the large intestine | the large intestine absorbs water and leaves undigested food which is removed as faeces |
| the small intestine | in the small intestine food is digested and then absorbed through the wall of the small intestine into the blood |
| the anus | the faeces is removed from the body through the anus |
