QuestionAnswer
what are the three lines of defense? First line of defense: Body barriers Second line of defense: non-specific responses Third line of Defense: specific immune responses
First line of defense: Body barriers-common defense includes skin, digestive tract, eyes. Body secretions. body flushes. friendly microbes prevent foreign bacteria from taking hold
Second line of Defense: Inflammation: acute inflammation blood components involved-plasma proteins; fast acting WBCs: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils; macrophages Classic sequence- tissue damage, tissue mast cells, capillaries release plasma proteins, clotting factors
Third line of defense: specific immune response-WBCs involved: macrophages, lymphocytes (T and B and NK cells) Classic sequence:recognition of antigen, repeated cell divisions, differentation into effector and memory cells
Classic sequence of third line of defense: Classic sequence:recognition of antigen, repeated cell divisions, differentation into effector and memory cells
Classic sequence of second line of defense: Classic sequence- tissue damage, tissue mast cells, capillaries release plasma proteins, clotting factors
Innate immunity launched quickly when tissue is damaged or when the body detects the invasion of microbes.
Adaptive immunity counter attack in which lymphocytes and proteins attack the invading microbes.
B cells produce what? Antibodies which in turn attack invading pathogens, called antibody mediated immunity
T cells attack... the pathogen directly which is called cell mediated immunity
Define Specificity; When all clones of a lymphocyte will taregt only one kind of antigen
active immunization a vaccine injected into the body which illicits a response for the production of effector cells and memory cells
passive immunization an injection of purified antibodies which help to defend the body against pathogens

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
