|---|---|
| fusion | process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity |
| solarwind | the continuous flow of charged particles from the sun that permeates the solar system. |
| main sequence | a series of star types to which most stars belong, represented on a Hertzsprung–Russell diagram as a continuous band extending from the upper left (hot, bright stars) to the lower right (cool, dim stars). |
| convection | the movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity, which consequently results in transfer of heat |
| light-year | a unit of astronomical distance equivalent to the distance that light travels in one year, which is 9.4607 × 1012 km (nearly 6 trillion miles). |
| neutron star | a celestial object of very small radius (typically 18 miles/30 km) and very high density, composed predominantly of closely packed neutrons. |
| corona | the rarefied gaseous envelope of the sun and other stars. The sun's corona is normally visible only during a total solar eclipse when it is seen as an irregularly shaped pearly glow surrounding the darkened disk of the moon. |
| parallex | the angular amount of parallax in a particular case, especially that of a star viewed from different points in the earth's orbit. |
| blackhole | a region of space having a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape. |
| sunspot | a spot or patch appearing from time to time on the sun's surface, appearing dark by contrast with its surroundings. |
| neubla | a cloud of gas and dust in outer space, visible in the night sky either as an indistinct bright patch or as a dark silhouette against other luminous matter. |
| doppler effect | an increase (or decrease) in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move toward (or away from) each other. |
