| drought | time with no rain |
| beach | next to the Gulf on a barrier island |
| dune | pile of sand behind a beach |
| swale | holds fresh rain water on a barrier island |
| prairie | grassy area on a barrier island |
| wetland | has wet, dark smelly soil; water loving plants; standing water |
| emergent plants | roots in the soil of a wetland, stems above the water |
| floating plants | leaves on top of water, roots don't go into soil |
| standing water | doesn't move; water that stays on top of soil |
| ecosystem services | how a wild area helps us |
| migratory | animals traveling long distances |
| brackish water | mix of salt and fresh water found in an estuary |
| surface water | bayous, lakes,streams, ponds, rivers; contain fresh water |
| ground water | aquifers; contain fresh water |
| evaporation | water changes from liquid to gas |
| condensation | water changes from gas to liquid |
| precipitation | rain or snow |
| runoff | water flows over the land |
| infiltration | water moves into the soil |
| transpiration | water evaporates up through a plant |
| atmosphere | the sky |
| spring | fresh water comes out of the ground |
