| abrasion | wearing away of rock by rock particles through water ice wind and gravity |
| frost wedging | when water seeps into cracks and then freezes and expands |
| oxidation | iron combines with water |
| permeable | full of tiny connected air spaces that allow water to seep in the rock |
| soil | loose weathered material on earth's surface |
| bedrock | solid layer of rock beneth the soil |
| humus | dark colored substance thatforms as plants and animals remains decay |
| fertility | measure of how well the plants soil supports the plants |
| loam | soil that is made up of clay sand and silt |
| pH scale | measures acidity |
| soil horizon | a layer of soil that differs in color texture and composition |
| top siol | crumby dark brown soil |
| subsoil | consists of clay little humus |
| decomposers | organisms that break down the dead organisms and return the nutrients back to the soil |
| natural resource | anything in the envirment that humans can use |
| soil conservation | management of soil to limit its destruction |
| crop rotation | different crops in a field each year |
| contour plowing | plows in the curves of the hill or slope instead of plowing straight lines |
| conservation plowing | dead leaves are plowed for next years crop |
