Earth Features Unit

QuestionAnswer
oceans Large bodies of salt water that surrounds a continent
seas Large bodies of salt water that is often connected to an ocean. These bodies of water may be partly or completely surrounded by land
rivers Large, flowing bodies of fresh water that usually empty into a sea or ocean
streams Small, flowing bodies of fresh water that flow into rivers
lakes/ponds Areas of fresh water that are surrounded by land; differ in size
glaciers Huge sheets of ice that cover land; found where temperatures are very cold
landforms Natural shapes or features on the Earth's surface.
volcano An opening in Earth's surface from which lava flows.
mountains A place on Earth's surface where the land is much higher than the land that surrounds it.
plateau A mountain area that has a flat top.
valley A lowland area between higher areas such as mountains.
canyon A deep valley with very steep sides.
cavern A large cave or underground chamber.
island An area of land tha is entirely surrounded by water.These are sometimes located in lakes, or out from a seashore.
