Rocks and Soils Unit

Igneous rocks This type of rock was once melted magma/lava that cooled and hardened.
Sedimentary rocks This type of rock is made up of pieces of rocks,animal shells/bones, or other remains of plants and animals that have been pressed and cemented together.
Metamorphic rocks This type of rock was once another type of rock deep inside Earth, but heat and the pressing of the rocks above caused the minerals to change.

limestone sedimentary rock
marble metamorphic rock
slate metamorphic rock
humus A type of soil made up of decayed parts of once-living organisms. It is dark, soft and very crumbly.
sand This type of soil has large grains with large spaces bewteen the grains. This soil lets water leave it quickly. It feels gritty.
clay This type of soil has very small grains,much smaller than sand or silt, and holds water easily. This soil is very sticky when wet, and when it dries, it forms hard clumps.
silt This type of soil has pieces that are smaller than sand. It feels like powder.
loam This soil combination has large and small grains with lots of humus. This soil is dark and rich soil for plants.
topsoil/potting soil A soil combination of humus and sand that is also good for growing plants.
minerals Are solid, formed in nature,have never been alive, an dhave properties by which they can be identified.
hardness A physical property that refers to whether a mineral can be scratched or can scratch something else.
color A physical property that helps identify minerals by their shade.
luster A phsyical property that refers to whether a mineral is shiny, pearly,or glassy. Not dull.
mineral identification chart A chart that will give information about the properties of the minerals listed on the key
rock A substance that is made up of many minerals.
acid test If minerals fizz or bubble when acid(vinegar)is placed on them, the mineral may have calcite in it.
