Strategies Before Reading

QuestionAnswer
What are some things as teachers we must identify before presenting literature to our class? 1) What do the students know about print? 2) What reading behaviors/interests are students exhibiting? 3) What do our students need to learn?
What sort of reading styles can teachers implement or perform with their class to benefit their students? Silent Reading, Peer Reading, Small Group Reading, Whole Group Reading, Reading out loud etc.
What are the five main categories of books? Storybooks, nonfiction books, big books, e-books, and class made books.
Emergent Literacy vs. Reading Readiness Emergent Literacy is becoming literate from birth; Reading Readiness is the way of the past which would involve students to master a set of skills prior to learning to read.
Functional-Formal Learning Today's Approach: Students INFORMALLY learn through interactions, modeling and exploration with written language Past Approach: Students learn only from formal teaching and monitoring (formal assessments).
