Term | Definition |

comet | A chunk of ice and dust with an orbit which is long and narrow |
asteroid | A large rock smaller than a planet that orbits the sun |
meteor | a meteoroid that enters into earth’s atmosphere and burns |
meteoroid | A chunk of rock or dust that usually comes from comets or asteroids |
meteorite | A small rock that lands on earth from space |
planet | A spherical body that orbits around the sun and has its own gravity |
moon | A naturally occurring satellite orbiting around a planet |
universe | All the galaxies put together, everything that exists |
galaxy | A group of stars held together by their own gravity |
solar system | The sun, planets and all the bodies that orbit around it |
constellation | A group of stars that form a pattern in the sky |
asteroid belt | Asteroids that revolve around the sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter |
star | Massive balls of luminous gas that are held together by their own gravity |
orbit | The path a planet takes around the sun |
terrestrial planets | Planets are dense and rocky. Also known as the Inner Planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth & Mars |
gas giants | Planets are very large and mostly made of gas. Also known as the Outer Planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune |
International Space Station | A habitable, artificial satellite in low earth orbit |
Hubble Telescope | A space telescope carried into orbit by a space shuttle in 1990, and remains in operation |
probe | A spacecraft carrying instruments intended for use in exploration of physical properties of outer space or other celestial bodies |
