Vocabulary from Chapter 1: Views of Earth Today

| atmosphere | the mixture of gases that surrounds and protects Earth. |
| hydrosphere | made up of all the water on Earth in oceans, lakes, glaciers, rivers and streams and underground. |
| biosphere | includes all life on Earth, in the air, on the land, and in the waters. |
| geosphere | includes all the features on Earth's surface-- the continents, islands, sea floor-- and everything below the surface. |
| relief map | a map that shows how high or low each feature is on Earth. |
| map scale | relates distances on a map to actual distances on Earth's surface. |
| map legend | also called a key, this is a chart that explains the meaning of each symbol used on a map. |
| equator | the line that divides Earth into northern and southern hemispheres. |
| latitude | a distance in degrees north or south of the equator. |
| prime meridian | an imaginary line that stretches from the North Pole through Greenwich, England, to the South Pole. |
| longitude | a distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian. |
| projection | a way of representing Earth's curved surface on a flat map. |
| topography | the shape, or features, of the land. |
| contour lines | the wiggly lines on a topographic map that show an area's elevation, slope and relief. |
| elevation | how high above sea level an area is. |
| slope | how steep an area or landform is. |
| relief | the difference between an area's high and low points. |
| contour interval | the difference in elevation from one contour line to the next. |
| remote sensing | the use of scientific equipment to gather information about something from a distance. |
| sensor | a mechanical or electrical device that receives and responds to a signal. |
| false-color image | when Earth's natural colors are replaced with artificial ones to highlight special features. |
| Geographic Information System (GIS) | computer systems that can store and arrange geographic data and display the data in many different types of maps. |
