Chapter 4 Lesson 1

TermDefinition
Stress Forces created by plate movement are examples of this.
Tension The stress force that pulls on the crust and thins the rock in the middle.
Compression The stress force that squeezes the rock until it folds or breaks.
Shearing Stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions.
Normal Fault Is when the fault cuts through the rock at an angle.
Reverse Fault Is when mountains are gradually lifted up over time at these faults.
Strike-Slip Fault Forms when rocks on either side of the fault slip past each other with a little up and down motion.
Plateau is a large area of flat land elevated high above sea level.
