Unit 8: Water Cycle
Eighth Grade Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Evaporation | Liquid water turns into a gas or vapor, energy must be added, happens before condensation |
| Transpiration | Liquid water evaporates through the leaves of plants, energy must be added, happens before condensation |
| Condensation | Gas (vapor) turns into liquid water, energy must be removed, happens before precipitation |
| Precipitation | Energy stays the same, happens before evaporation, snow, rain, sleet, hail |
| Distillation | A method that consists of heating a liquid until it evaporates, and then condensing the vapor and collecting in a separate container |
| Pollutant | Substances found in water that don't belong there |
| Purify | Distillation purifies water by removing the pollutants so that the water is clean and pure |
| Runoff | Precipitation that flows overland into surface water, like lakes and streams |
| Infiltration | Water that seeps deeper into the Earth |
| Water Table | The water level underground, it represents the boundary between the unsaturated zone and the saturated zone |
| Unsaturated Zone | Lies above the water table and is filled with a lot of air pockets period |
| Saturated Zone | Where all of the spaces between the rocks and soil are filled with water period save |
| Groundwater | Water that is stored in the saturated zone spaces |
| Aeration | Air is added to water. This allows the gases trapped in water to escape and adds oxygen to the water |
| Coagulation | Dirt and other suspected solid particles began to stick together chemically into clumps called "floc" |
| Sedimentation | Gravity is an important force during sedimentation causing the floc to fall to the bottom of the water |
| Filtration | Sand and pebbles filters remove most of the impurities remaining in the water after coagulation and sedimentation |
