Pollution The introduction of contaminating substances or energy into the natural environment that change the environment for the worse.
Hazardous Wastes Toxic or poisonous chemicals, usually from factories.
Radioactive Wastes Wastes from nuclear power plants.
Solid Wastes Useless, unwanted, or discarded materials found in landfills.
Fossil Fuels Fuels formed hundreds of millions of years ago from the remains of dead plants and animals, such as coal, oil, and natural gas.
Hydrocarbons Compounds made of hydrogen and carbon that are harmful to plants and can break down the ozone layer.
Acid Rain Precipitation that is more acidic than normal (pH less than 7).
Global Warming The rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation.
Greenhouse Gases Gases in the atmosphere that trap heat and make the Earth a place that is warm enough to live.
Thermal Pollution Warmed water is put into rivers, lakes, and streams and causes the temperature of these bodies of water to increase.
Eutropication The killing of organisms in a body of water caused by fertilizer and organic wastes being washed into the water, increasing nutrients and causing excessive plant and algae growth and decay and reducing the oxygen content of the water.
