|---|---|
| lithosphere | the rigid outer part of the earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle. |
| asthenosphere | the upper layer of the earth's mantle, below the lithosphere, in which there is relatively low resistance to plastic flow and convection is thought to occur. |
| continental crust | the relatively thick part of the earth's crust that forms the large landmasses. It is generally older and more complex than the oceanic crust. |
| oceanic crust | Oceanic crust is the uppermost layer of the oceanic portion of a tectonic plate. The crust overlies the solidified and uppermost layer of the mantle. The crust and the solid mantle layer together constitute oceanic lithosphere. |
| transform fault boundary | is a type of fault whose relative motion is predominantly horizontal, in either a sinistal (left lateral) or dextral (right lateral) direction. |
| oceanic-oceanic convergent boundary | The denser plate, made of oceanic crust, is subducted underneath the less dense plate. and from trench and a volcano island. |
| trench | a long, narrow ditch. |
| volcano | A volcano is a rupture in the crust of a planetary-mass object, such as Earth, that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface. |
| rift valley | A rift valley is a linear-shaped lowland between several highlands or mountain ranges created by the action of a geologic rift or fault. |
| mid-ocean ridge | is an underwater mountain range, formed by plate tectonics. |
