Landscape Development and Environmental Change

| Escarpment | A steep slope or cliff in layered rock; often formed from rocks resistant to erosion. |
| Landscape | The features of the Earth surface between the atmosphere and lithosphere. |
| Landscape region | A portion of area with characteristics that distinguish it from other areas. Ex. rock structure, elevation, degree of slope, and stream drainage pattern |
| Mountain | Area of high elevation compared to the surrounding elevation or sea level. Normally has regions of steep gradients. |
| Plain | Low elevation area that is relatively flat. |
| Plateau | A landscape of high, horizontally flat ground |
| Ridges | Long, narrow, high, steep-sloped part of the landscape that is usually part of a mountain range. |
| Stream drainage pattern | The shape of the rock or loose material that confines the stream |
| Uplifting forces | Force that originates beneath or in the lithosphere that raises the land, builds mountains, and causes continental growth. |
