Genetics

TermDefinition
dispersal scattering of seeds
reproduction producing offspring similar to the parents.
trait an inherited characteristic of an organism.
dominant a gene that controls the recessive form and determines the phenotype
ressive a gene that can be controlled by a dominant form when both alleles of the gene in a pair are recessive.
gene one of the many parts of a DNA molecule that contains genetic instructions for a certain trait.
allele two genes interact to produce characteristics. Two copies of genes are alleles. The two alleles together make a gene.
punnett square a chart used to show all the possible different genotypes of offspring from a particular male and female parent.
environmental factor Anything that changes the environment and influences living organisms.
genetic factor Genetic variations that can have large or small effects on the likelihood of developing a particular disease.
adaptation A characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment or reproduce. This may be passed to the organism’s offspring through its genes.
homozygous A characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment or reproduce. This may be passed to the organism’s offspring through its genes.
heterozygous When a gene is represented by one dominant allele and one recessive allele and the trait is that of the dominant allele. This is often called a hybrid.
