Salivary Glands The parotid, submaxillary, and sublingual glands
Uvula Helps the gag reflex
Pharynx Food and air passes through it
Epiglottis The flap that covers the trachea so food doesn’t go down it
Esophagus The tube that connects the pharynx with the stomach
Cardiac Sphincter Allows food to pass into the stomach but does it move back up into the esophagus
Stomach Stores and breaks down the food we eat
Pyloric Sphincter The contracting ring of muscle which guards the entrance of the small intestine and controls the amount of food entering the stomach
Pancreas Produces digestive enzymes and hormones
Descending Colon Stores the food that goes to the rectum
Ascending & Transverse Colon Part of the large intestine; removes the water
Jejunum Chemical breakdown of the food chyme is completed
Ileum Absorbs nutrients and bile is absorbed here
Duodenum The chyme is mixed with bile and pancreatic juices in order to break down the food
ICV Opens and closes periodically in order to let food move through the digestive track
Anas Allows the digested food to exit the body
Rectum Compresses waste into solid form for removal.
Anal Sphincter The sphincter that decides if the digestive food can exit the body
Appendix Produces some anti
Caecum Absorbs water and salts from undigested food
Gall Bladder Stores and concentrates bile; it then sends it to the duodenum to help digest fats
Liver It processes the nutrients from the small intestine; produces bile
Mouth Chewing breaks down the food into smaller, easier digested pieces
Tongue Pushes the food to the back of the mouth
Hard Palate Helps the tongue push the food to the back of the mouth
Soft Palate Prevents food from going to the nose
