Functions of Cells
Animal cells
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Cytoplasm | Watery environment in which life functions take place by means of organelles contained in it; made of starch (a polysaccharide) |
| Chloroplasts | Contains energy |
| Cell Wall | Made of cellulose; protects and supports plant cell and maintains shape |
| Golgi Apparatus | Protein packaging structure; important in endocytosis and exocytosis |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Provides channels that carries messages through the cytoplasm |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Has ribosomes attached; common in cells that emit proteins |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Has no ribosomes; organelle is where fats are made; common in cells that emit hormones |
| Ribosomes | Creates proteins |
| Centrosome | Contains centrioles that are functional during the production of animal cells |
| Nucleus | Information center for cell reproduction and other cell functions |
| Nucleolus | Acts as a reservoir for RNA (Ribonucleic Acid) |
| Mitochondria | Sites of cellular respiration and energy production; more active cells have a larger mitochondria |
| Vacuoles | Reservoirs for water, dissolved materials, and wastes; maintains internal pressure of a cell |
| Chromosomes | Contains the hereditary information material (DNA); are the agents for distribution of hereditary information |
