How are metamorphic rocks classified? The arrangements of the grains.
What is a foliated rock? Metamorphic rocks that have their grains arranged in parallel layers of bands
Examples of foliated rocks Slate, Schist, and gniess
What is a nonfoliated rock? Metamorphic rocks that do not split into layers
Examples of unfoliated rocks Marble, Quartzite, sandstone
What characteristics of marble make it useful? A fine, even grain it can be cut into thin slabs or carved into many shapes and easily polished
What characteristics of slate make it useful? Foliated slate splits easily into flat pieces
