QuestionAnswer
How can decomposers add to the value of soil? Decomposers such as earthworms break down and digest organic matter to create humus which increases the fertility of soil.
What happens to rocks that are exposed on Earth's surface? They are subjected to erosion and weathering.
How does wind cause erosion? Through the process of deflation. (i.e. blowing stuff away;)
What type of landform contains still or standing water? Lakes and/or Ponds
What is chemical weathering? Chemical weathering is an erosion process that changes the composition of a rock.
What kind of map would show an area's elevation, relief, and landforms? A topographical map
What is physical/mechanical weathering? Physical or mechanical weathering is an erosion process that breaks down solid rock.
What is the mid-ocean ridge? A continuous underwater mountain range that encircles the Earth.
What is frost wedging? Frost wedging is an erosion process that breaks rocks apart by the constant freezing, thawing, refreezing, thawing cycle.
Why do modern GPS systems use signals from a network of satellites? To pinpoint your latitude and longitude.
How are sand dunes created? Wind picks up sand in one location and carries it to another location where it hits an obstacle and deposits the sand.
What is it called when a farmer uses the leftover crops and stalks from last year and plows them into his field? This is called conservation plowing.
How is conservation plowing useful? It returns soil nutrients, retains moisture, and holds soil in place.
How is contour plowing useful? It helps to minimize erosion of soil, by slowing the runoff of rain water.
What is plucking? When a glacier melts and refreezes picking up rocks and dragging them along.
How can a farmer prevent the loss of nutrients caused by planting the same crop year after year? By the process of crop rotation.
What is the cause of creep? The cycle of freezing and thawing and refreezing water beneath the soil.
How can sand dunes 'move'? The wind shifts from one direction to another forming sand dunes of varied shapes and sizes.
What is a meander? A big loop shape of a river.
Which soil horizon contains the most humus? The topsoil or the A horizon.
What does groundwater form in a cavern and how? Stalactites and stalagmites, through the process of erosion and deposition.
How do rocks get 'rounded'? By the constant abrasion of erosion, chipping and wearing away tiny fragments of the rock.
