Food Chain for 3rd Grade Science

VocabularyDefinition
Producer Something that makes its own food and gets its energy from the sun
Consumer Something that needs to get its food
Herbivore An animal that only eats plants
Carnivore An animal that eats only meat
Omnivore An animal that eats both plants and animals
Predator The enemy of an animal -- the hunter
Prey The food of an animal -- what is being hunted
Scavenger A carnivore that feeds on the bodies of a dead organism
Decomposer An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms and returns the raw materials to the environment
Food Chain A series of events in which one organism eats another one to obtain energy
