Science Cells

A group of similar cells that make perform a common function Tissue
A stucture made up of a collection of tissues that carries out a specialized function Organ
A group of organs working together to perform body functions Organ system
The smallest functional and stuctural unit of all organisms Cell
Examples of organ systems Digestive system, resperatory system, circulatory system integumetary system, skeletal system

Tissue A group of similar cells that make perform a common function
Organ A stucture made up of a collection of tissues that carries out a specialized function
Organ System A group of organs working together to perform body functions
Cell The smallest functional and stuctural unit of all organisms
Levels of organization for living things Cell to tissue, Tissue to Organ, Organ to Organ system, Organ system to Organism
Cell to tissue, Tissue to Organ, Organ to Organ system, Organ system to Organism Levels of organization for living things
Lysosomes These are special vesicles that contain enzymes that destroy worn-out or damaged organelles, they get rid of waste materials & protect the cell from foreign invaders.
Vacoule A large membrane covered chamber found in plant cells, smaller version in animal cells, stores liquids needed by the cell In plant cell it is large, and in animal it is small
Nucleolus This is found inside the nucleus, contains material to build proteins & ribosomes, is a dark spot inside the nucleus
Cytoplasm Gel- like fluid inside cells that holds the organelles in place Found in plant cell
Chloroplast An additional energy converting organelle in plant cells and algae, contains chlorophyll, photosynthesis happens here.
Golgi complex Lipids and proteins from the ER are delivered here where they are modified for different functions, "packaged" then pinched
ER A membrane covered compartment that makes lipids and other materials for use inside and outside the cell, breaks down drugs and certain chemicals, also considered the internal delivery system.
mitochondria A bean shaped organelle, cell respiration takes place here, breaks down lipids and carbohydrates to produce energy for cells and daily functions, has a double membrane and contains its own DNA
ribosomes These are found on the ER or floating around in the cell, they make proteins that cells must have, each cell contains thousands.
cell wall A hard wall in plant cells that provide strength and support. Found in plant cell
cell membrane Surrounds ALL cells, keeps the cytoplasm inside the cell, allows nutrients into the cell & lets out waste products
nucleus Control center of the cell, stores the DNA that has the information on how to make all of the cell's proteins, directs the cell's activities
Cytoskeleton A network of fibers that holds the cell together, helps the cell to keep its shape, and aids in movement Throughout cytoplasm

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
