Seasons Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Axis An imaginary line that an object spins or revolves around.
Orbit The circular path of an object as it revolves around another object.
Revolve To move around another object along a circular path, as in an orbit.
Rotate Turning around an axis; spinning.
Season A period of the year determined by the position of Earth as it revolves around the Sun.
Sun Any star around which planets revolve.
Gravity A force that exists between any two objects that have mass.
Neap Tide Produced when the sun, moon, and Earth align at a 90 degree angle; the water on Earth is under the least amount of gravitational pull, because the sun's and moon's forces are opposing each other, pulling the smallest rise and fall of tidal levels.
Spring Tide A type of tide that occurs when the sun, moon, and Earth are in a straight like; alignment and gravity from the moon and the sun pull the water in the same direction.
Crater A large, circular pit in the surface of a planet or other body in space usually formed when two bodies in space collide.
Eclipse An event whereby one astronomical body passes between two other astronomical bodies.
Lunar Having to do with the moon or moon cycles.
Tides The rise and fall of the ocean's surface level'e due to the gravitational pull f the sun and moon.
