Plant Vocabulary

Chlorophyll Chlorophyll is a type of plant pigment responsible for the absorption of light in the process of photosynthesis, which creates energy.
Dicot Dicots, were one of the two groups into which all the flowering plants were formerly divided.
Vein Any of the tubes forming part of the blood circulation system of the body, carrying in most cases oxygen-depleted blood toward the heart.
Cuticle A protective and waxy or hard layer covering the epidermis of a plant, invertebrate, or shell.
Root The part of a plant that attaches it to the ground or to a support, typically underground, conveying water and nourishment to the rest of the plant via numerous branches and fibers.
Pollen A fine dust that contains the sperm of seed-producing plants
Xylem Nonliving vascular tissue that carries water and dissolved minerals from the roots of a plant to its leaves
Stem A vascular plant organ consisting of an alternating system of nodes and internodes that support the leaves and reproductive structures.
Monocot An angiosperm that has only one seed leaf.
Pollination The transfer of pollen from male reproductive structures to female reproductive structures in plants
Chloroplast An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs
Germination Early growth stage of a plant embryo
Seed coat A tough outer covering of a seed, formed from the outer coat of an ovule.
Seed An adaptation of some terrestrial plants consisting of an embryo packaged along with a store of food within a protective coat.
Conifers A gymnosperm, or naked seed plant, that produces cones
Leaf The major sites of photosynthesis in most plants.
Sprout The tiny new plant that grows out of a seed.
Spore A reproductive cell with a hard, protective coating
Phloem Living vascular tissue that carries sugar and organic substances throughout a plant
Taproot Single, large root like a carrot.
Cotyledon (n, v) the inner fluid of a plant or any essential body fluid; energy, vitality; a person taken advantage of (noun); undermine, weaken, tire out (verb)
Stomata A microscopic pore surrounded by guard cells in the epidermis of leaves and stems that allows gas exchange between the environment and the interior of the plant.
