Geology key Terms

Force A push or a pull; the capacity to do work or cause physical change
Kinetic Energy The energy of motion
Potential Energy Stored energy
Tectonic Plate One of seven large pieces of Earth's crust
Fault A crack in the Earth's crust where one part of the crust has moved against another part
Compression The squeezing or pressing together of two or more things
Energy The ability to do work or cause change
Geologist A person who studies the physical structure of the earth and how it has changed over time
Era Period of time in history that often begins and ends with a important event
Metamorphic Rock A rock that has been formed from existing rocks that have been changed by heat, pressure and chemical reactions
Sedimentary Rock A rock formed by layers of sediment deposited over time
Radiometric Dating Determining the age of a rock by measuring the amount of radioactive decay
Relative Age Dating Determining the age of a rocks by comparing their positioning and the fossils they contain
Mineral A nonliving substance formed in the Earth that has a definite chemical crystalline shape
Cleavage The tendency to split along certain definite lines, as in some stones
Fracture The tendency of a mineral not to break smoothly and leave an uneven surface
Hardness How well an mineral resists scratching
Luster The way light reflects from the surface of a mineral
Streak The color of a mineral in powder form
Erosion The carrying away of rock and soil from one place to another by glaciers, gravity, wind or water
Deposition The placing of pieces of rock in a new location
Gravity The force of attraction between any two masses
Runoff Precipitation that does not soak into the soil so it flows along the surface
Sediment A substance that is deposited by wind, water or ice
Weathering The breaking down of rocks by environmental forces
