cellular respiration the complex process in which cells make ATP by breaking down organics compounds
pyruvic acid the three-carbon compound that is produced during glycolysis and needed for both the aerobic and anaerobic pathways of cellular respiration that follow glycolysis
NADH an electron carrier molecule
anaerobic describes a process that does not require oxygen
aerobic respiration the process when pyruvic acid is broken down and NADH is used to make a large amount of ATP
glycolysis a biochemical pathway in which one six-carbon molecule of glucose is oxidized to produce two three-carbon molecules of pyruvic acid
NAD+ an organic molecule that serves as a an electron carrier y being oxidized to NAD+ and reduced to NADH
fermentation the combination of glycolysis and these additional pathways, which regenerate NAD+
lactic acid fermentation when an enzyme converts pyruvic acid made during glycolysis into another three-carbon compound called lactic acid
alcoholic fermentation a process used to convert pyruvic acid into ethyl alcohol
kilocalorie the unit the energy is often measured in
