Earth Science 5th Grade- Oceans Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Abyssal Plain A deep region formed at the bottom of the ocean
Barrier Island A long narrow island that is close to the mainland, protecting mainland from erosion
Beach A pebbly or sandy shore that is usually by the ocean or a lake
Coast The part of the land near the sea
Continental Shelf The area of sea where the sea is shallow
Continental Slope The slope between the continental shelf and the deep ocean shore
Drainage Basin The area of land that contributes water to a stream or river
Estuary The tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream
Inlets A small section of the sea, lake or river
Mid-Ocean Ridge The mountain range on the floor of the Earth's ocean.
Rift Zone A feature of volcanoes and constantly moving tectonic plates in a row
Trench A long narrow ditch
Seamount An underwater mountain
Ocean The vast body of saltwater that covers 3/4 of the Earth's surface
Ocean Shore Zone The zone near the ocean that can be affected by waves, currents, tides and storms
Shoreline The line along which a large body of water meets the land
Water Shed A smaller version of a drainage basin
Volcanic Island An island formed from underwater volcanic activity
