how much do birds eat and why? a lot, because flying takes so much energy
what kind of eggs do they lay? hard shell eggs
what are feathers made of? dead cells, they same thing finger nails are made of
what are special adaptions/ characteristics of birds? almost hollow bones, feathers, lungs with air sacs, oil glands, wings, beaks,store food in crop and grind in gizzard, lay hard shell eggs, and are warm-blooded
what are flight adaptations? special feathers, wings, air sacs, strong big hearts and almost hollow bones
what are the four types of feathers and what are they like? down- light fluffy; for insulation
what are beaks for? gather food, specialized for what kind of food they eat
what are the two most important/major adaptions of birds? beaks and feet
what are feathers? modified scales
what do some birds do when it's winter pr the climate changes to their disadvantage? they migrate, usually in flocks
muscular/skeletal? inner skeleton, two wings and two feet. bones almost hollow for flying
digestion? eat a ton. mouth, esophagus, stored in crop, grinned in gizzard, intestines, anus. one- way system
nervous? brain and nerve system. large eyes allow to judge distance. excellent hearing. great song-voice
circulation? warm-blooded, strong, 4-chambered heart. double loop system
respiration? breathe w/ lungs and trachea. has air sacs for extra air for flight
reproduction? sexually male fertilizes internally. lays hard shell eggs.
excretion? molts feathers once a year. kidneys and ureter for liquid waste. intestines and rectum for solid waste
what are the four groups? flightless- can't fly ex. penguin
