how long ago were they on earth? 360 million years ago
what did they evolve from? certain fish
what does amphibian mean? double life
what metamorphosis do they go through and what are the stages? complete metmorphosis, egg hatches to tadpole that lives in water, swims, and breathes w/ gills. grows front legs and starts forming lungs it the pollywog stage. the polliwog loses it's tail, grows back legs, fully breathes w/ lungs, and lives on land
where do the live? first in water then on land, that's why they have a "double life"
how do they breathe? when young they breathe with gills. then as adults they breathe through their skin and with lungs
why must they always be moist? because they breathe through their skin
what are some examples of amphibians? frogs, toads, salamenders
how many legs and what are their toes like? four legs, toes without claws.
what do they do in the winter? they hibernate
when they hibernate in the summer, what is that called? aestivation
muscular/skeletal? inner skeleton w/ backbone. webbed feet no claws. muscles
digestion? takes food through mouth. long sticky tongue that whips out and grabs prey. has system w/ stomach, intestines, etc.
nervous? brain w/ nervous system. two eyes w/ an extra eyelid t protect eye on land.
circulation? cold-blooded, body temp. same as surroundings. has two loop system, one from lungs to heart and one heart to body.
respiration? takes oxygen from skin. tadpole uses gills, adult uses lungs.
symmetry? bilateral
reproduction? external fertilization w/ male and female -- sexually. jelly like eggs laid in water
why do frogs and toads constantly pulsate their throat? to pump air into lungs
why do they croak? to find/get mate
what do they have in their skin? many glands
