Regions of the earth

TermDefinition
ALTITUDE Height of an area above sea level. The higher the altitude of an area, the lower the average temperatures.
CLIMATE The average weather of a region over a period of time.
CURRENT A moving stream of water in the ocean.
DESERT A place that gets less than 10 inches of water a year.
EQUATOR The imaginary line around the center of the earth.
GRASSLANDS Found in both temperate and tropical climates; most of the Midwestern U.S. is made up of grasslands
OASIS An area in the desert where water is found
TEMPERATE In this climate zone, winters are cold and summers are warm.
TROPICAL In this climate zone, it is warm all year round and rainfall is high.
TUNDRA A huge area of plains with no trees.
LATITUDE The distance north or south of the equator
POLAR In a polar climate zone, it is cold much of the year and little rain or snow falls.
