Waves

QuestionAnswer
wave the transfer of energy moving through a medium
amplitude a measure of how far the particles in the medium move away fro their normal rest position
wave length the distance from any point on a wave to an identical point on the next wave
wave period the time required for one wave length to pass a given point
frequency tells how many cycles occur in an amount of time
hertz one equals one wavelength per second
wave speed speed at which a wave travels depending on the properties of the medium
transverse wave a wave in which the particles of the medium move perpendicularly to the direction of the wave is moving
electromagnetic wave a wave that is emitted by vibrating electrical charges and can travel through a vacuum.
mechanical wave a wave that requires a medium in which to travel
longitudinal wave a wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of wave motion
medium material that energy can transfer through
