Earth&Sun Inv. 3
Earth's Atmosphere
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| air | a mixture of invisible gas that fills space everywhere on Earth |
| atmosphere | the layers of gases surrounding the Earth |
| compressed | forced into a smaller space |
| pressure | the push when compressed air comes back |
| troposphere | the layer of the atmosphere closest to the Earth's surface; all the weather happens in it |
| stratosphere | the region of the atmosphere above the troposphere; contains ozone |
| mesosphere | the region in the atmosphere above the stratosphere where meteors burn up |
| thermosphere | the region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere |
| exosphere | layer of the atmosphere above the thermosphere; the transition from the atmosphere into space |
| ozone | a form of oxygen in the stratosphere that soaks up harmful rays of the sun |
| weather | the condition of the air around us |
| forecast | a prediction of what kind of weather to expect |
| weather variables | the data that scientists measure about the weather |
| hygrometer | a weather instrument that measures humidity |
| wind vane | a weather instrument that measures wind direction |
| humidity | the amount of water vapor in the air |
| air pressure | the force exerted on the Earth by a mass of air |
| anemometer | a weather instrument that measures wind speed |
| barometer | a weather instrument that measures air pressure |
| thermometer | a weather instrument that measures temperature |
| cloud | a large accumulation of tiny water droplets in the air |
| cloud recipe | warm rising air, dust, water vapor |
| front line | the boundary between two bodies of air with different characteristics |
| cold front | formed when a mass of cold air advances and pushes away warmer air |
| warm front | formed when warm air advances and pushes away colder air |
| stationary front | two air masses meet and neither moves out of the way |
| high pressure | air that is falling, cooler, and contracts |
| low pressure | air that is warmer, rising, and expanding |
| isobars | lines drawn on a weather map to connect areas of the same pressure |
| meteorologist | the scientists who study the weather |
| meteorology | the science of weather |
| gases in air | oxygen21% and nitrogen 78% |
| cirrus | high, thin, wispy clouds made of ice crystals |
| cumulus | puffy clouds in the middle of the sky |
| stratus | long, layered clouds that are lower in the sky |
