5th Grade Science - Simple Machines_Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Work | When a force acts on something over a distance, either to life it or to overcome resistance |
| Simple Machine | Basic devices that provide mechanical or other advantage |
| Pulley | A wheel with a grooved rim in which a rope/wire can run to change the direction of the pull (force) while lifting a load |
| Fixed Pulley | Has a wheel that is attached to something above the load - fixed pulleys give a directional advantage |
| Moveable Pulley | Had a wheel that is attached to something above the load - movable pulleys give mechanical advantage |
| Directional Advantage | A change in direction that results from putting a rope through a fixed pulley |
| Mechanical Advantage | Reduces the effort (force) needed to lift a load or overcome a resistance - moveable pulleys give a mechanical advantage |
| Force | A push or pull exerted on an object - sometimes called effort |
| Friction | A force that resists motion between two objects in contact |
| Gravity | The natural force that attracts any two objects with mass toward each other |
