Science Space

Learn the facts and Vocabulary about space

TermDefinitionGOOD OR NOT GOOD
Celestial Objects Objects such as planets, moons, and stars that are located in the sky or in space. I think that this is important. So yes this is good.
System A group of interacting or interdependent parts forming a complex whole; for example, all the factors or variables in an environment, or all the planetary bodies revolving around a star. I think that this is good.
Solar System The Sun together with the group of planets and other celestial bodies that are held by its gravitational attraction and revolve around it. Yes I think that this is good
Gravity The force that causes objects with mass to attract one another YES THIS IS DEFIANTLY GOOD
Sun The luminous celestial body around which Earth and other planets revolve and from which they receive heat and light. Yes this is also important
Star A ball of gas in space that produces its own light and heat. This can be important but also very dangerous
Planet Any of the large celestial bodies that revolve around the Sun in the solar system this is good because we live in it
Inner Planet Any of the rocky, terrestrial planets of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, whose orbits are inside the asteroid belt. these are the planets that are warm so yes this is good
Rocky Made of rocks Not that imortant
Terrestrial Earth-like Not that important
Outer Planet Any of the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, whose orbits lie beyond the asteroid belt. Important because these are the cold planets and sometimes cold id good
Asteroids Large and small rocks or metallic masses orbiting the Sun; made up of materials similar to those that formed the planets. Not important because they can hit us
Asteroid Belt The region between the inner and outer planets where most asteroids orbit around the Sun. This can be important
Meteoroid A natural chunk of rock or dust existing outside of Earth’s atmosphere. This can hit us so it is not that important
Meteorites Remains of meteoroids that strike the surface of Earth or the Moon. This makes the world have landmarks so sometime they can be important
Satellite Something that orbits around another object; for example, a moon orbiting a planet or a human-made object orbiting Earth. This can be important because it helps us
Moon A celestial body that revolves around a planet. This is important because without it then the night might not be very bright
Galilean Moons The four largest and brightest moons of Jupiter, which were discovered by Galileo Galili: Ganymede, Io, Callisto, and Europa. this is important because it is the same as the moons for our planet
Comet A celestial body of ice, dust, and rock with an elongated and elliptical orbit. this is not very important
Coma Glowing, heated dust and vaporized gas that surrounds the icy comet nucleus as it travels near the Sun; solar winds cause heated gases to stream out of the nucleus, forming a tail, which points away from the Sun. this is very important
Meteor A small object that enters Earth's atmosphere from space and burns due to friction, emitting light. this is not important because it is heading straight for a planet and it can kill a lot of people
Orbital Path The gravitationally-curved path of an object around a point in space. This is not a thing that we really need

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
