Water Cycle vocabulary

TermDefinition
evaporation process where water changes from a liquid to a gas
condensation process where water vapor (gas) changes in to a liquid
precipitation process in which water falls from clouds and returns to Earth
accumulation the process in which water pools/collects in large bodies (oceans, seas, and lakes)
subsurface runoff rain, snow melt, or other water that flows underground
surface runoff rain, snow melt, or other water that flows in surface streams, rivers, or canals
transpiration process in which some water within plants evaporates into the atmosphere. Water is absorbed by the plant's roots first, then exits by evaporating through pores in the plant.
infiltration water seeps into the land and becomes groundwater through pore spaces in the soil/rock
evaporation leaves behind minerals like salt
condensation water drops join together in the atmosphere to form clouds
precipitation rain, snow, sleet and hail
evaporation sun heats a surface body of water and the liquid water changes into a gas (water vapor)
percolation process in which water infiltrates the ground and under lying rock layers
