vocabulary for 6th grade matter unit

| atom | smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still have the properties |
| element | the substances that are the building blocks of all matter |
| molecule | smallest particle of a substance that has the properties of that substance |
| compound | matter that is made of two or more elements |
| mixture | a combination of two substances that can be separated by physical means |
| solution | mixture in which one substance, is dissolved in another substance |
| property | characteristic of a material that helps to identify or classify matter |
| solid | matter that has a definite shape and volume, such as a rock |
| liquid | matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape |
| gas | matter that has no definite volume or shape |
| plasma | like a gas but consisting of charged particles |
| kinetic energy | energy an object has because it is moving |
| heat | transfer of thermal energy between substances that are at different temperatures |
| temperature | measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance |
| vaporization | change of matter from a liquid state to a gaseous state |
| condensation | process in which matter changes from a gaseous to a liquid state |
| sublimation | change from a solid state to a gaseous state without passing through a liquid state |
| physical property | property of matter that can be observed without changing the composition or identity of matter |
| chemical property | characteristics of substances that describes its intensity to combine with other substances and form new ones |
| density | the amount of mass of a given volume of a substance |
| mass | amount of matter in a substance |
| volume | amount of space an object takes up |
| boiling point | temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas state |
| freezing point | temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid state to a solid state |
| solubility | ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance, such as sugar dissolving into water |
| solute | the molecules of a substance that are being dissolved into another (The Sugar) |
| solvent | the substance that something is being dissolved into, such as the water |
