Light and Waves Voca

TermDefinition
Wave a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place
Energy the ability to do work
Medium material through which a wave travels
Mechanical waves travel through gases, liquids or solids
Vibration repeated back
Amplitude maximum distance that the particles of the medium carrying the wave move away from their resting position
Wavelength distance between 2 corresponding points (crest to crest, trough to trough)
Frequency the number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time
Speed how far a wave travels in a given amount of time
Crest The high point of a wave
Visible Light Electromagnetic waves that you can see
Opaque material that reflects or absorbs all light that strikes it
Primary colors Three colors that can be combined to make any other color
Damping a decrease of amplitude due to friction or other forces
Electromagnetic spectrum complete range of electromagnetic waves placed in order of increasing frequency
Primary colors of light Red, Green, and blue. When all mixed together it creates white light
Trough The low point of a wave
Plane mirror a flat sheet of glass that has a smooth silver colored coating on one side
Concave mirrors a mirror with a surface that curves inward like the inside of a bowl
Convex mirrors a mirror with a surface that curves outward
Resting position is the position in which the wave would sit if there was no disturbance moving through it.
Electromagnetic waves transfers electric and magnetic energy
Angle of incidence the angle that an incident light or ray makes with a perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence
Refraction bending of light waves due to change in speed
Lens a curved piece of glass or other transparent material that is used to refract light
Law of reflection the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection
Convex lens Lens that are thicker in the center than the edges
Concave lens lens that are thinner in the center than the edges

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
