hardness A measure of how weak or strong a mineral is
luster The way in which a mineral reflects light
ore A thing that u mine up from the ground
rock A naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or organic matter
mineral a natural, usually inorganic solid that has a characteristic composition and an orderly internal structure
weathering the natural process by which atmospheric and environmental agents, such as wind, rain, and temperature change, disintegrate and decompose rocks
texture the quality of a rock that is based on the sizes, shapes, and position of the rock's grains
strata a layer of material, naturally or artificially formed, often one of a number of parallel layers one upon another
instructive igneous rocks Igneous rocks that form inside the earth. Usually have small crystals
extrusive igneous rocks Igneous rocks that form above the ground. Usually has larger crystals
crystal and crystal formation A solid whose atoms, ions, or molecules are arranged in a definite pattern
fracture the manner in which a mineral breaks along curved or irregular surfaces
sillicate a mineral that contains a combination of silicon and oxygen, and one or more metals
sedimentary rocks A rock that forms from compressed or cemented layers of sediment
igneous rocks Rock that forms when magma cools and solidifies
metamorphic rocks a rocks that forms from other rocks as a result of intense heat, pressure, or chemical processes
rock cycle A process where rocks can change from one from to another
quary A pit where stones or minerals are extracted from
fossil the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form or as a mold or cast in rock
sediments matter that settles to the bottom of a liquid; dregs
magma hot fluid or semi fluid material below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is formed by cooling
lava hot molten or semi fluid rock erupted from a volcano or fissure, or solid rock resulting from cooling of this.
beadrock the last layer of soil
topsoil the first layer of soil
humas the organic component of soil, formed by the decomposition of leaves and other plant material by soil microorganisms.
subsoil the soil lying immediately under the surface soil
soil horizon each layer of soil in a soil profile
soil profile a vertical section of soil that shows the layers, or horizons
natural resource any natural material used by humans
loam a fertile soil of clay and sand containing humus.
soil he upper layer of earth in which plants grow, a black or dark brown material typically consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay, and rock particles.
Moh's scale a scale of hardness used in classifying minerals. It runs from 1 to 10 using a series of reference minerals, and a position on the scale depends on the ability to scratch minerals rated lower.
fossil fuel a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms
renewable resource a substance of economic value that can be replaced or replenished in the same or less amount of time as it takes to draw the supply down.
nonrenewable resource a resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption
conservation the action of conserving something
uplift the rising of regions of Earths crust to higher elevations
deposition the process in which material is laied down
