| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Tectonic Plates | a massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic lithospheres. |
| Crustal Plate | a rigid layer of the Earth’s crust that is believed to drift slowly across the surface of the Earth over time |
| Ocean plates | a layer of the Earth’s crust that is at the bottom of the ocean that is believed to drift slowly across the Earth over time |
| Ocean Basin | anywhere on the earth that is covered by seawater |
| Primary waves | seismic waves, which are the first waves to appear on a seismograph during an earthquake |
| Secondary waves | also known as shear waves; waves that move through the body as opposed to surface waves |
| Surface waves | a seismic wave that is trapped near the surface of the earth |
| Ring of Fire | Ring of Fire: an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes occur |
| Volcanoes | a rupture in the crust of that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from below the Earth’s surface |
| molten | liquefied by heat |
| Igneous rock | rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lave |
| metamorphic rock | rock formed from the transformation of preexisting rock through heat and pressure, that causes a physical or a chemical change. |
| sedimentary rock | rock formed from materials and mineral collecting and forming together |
| Rock samples | Rock samples |
| Mountains | a large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level |
| Lava | hot molten or semifluid rock erupted from a volcano |
| Magma | hot fluid or semifluid material below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is formed by cooling |
| inner core | the innermost part of the Earth |
