What is an air mass? Giant body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure throughout
What is wind? horizonal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure.
What are winds caused by? Differences in air pressure
How is wind direction determined? Wind vane
What is wind speed measured with? Anemometer
What are local winds? winds that blow over short distances
What are local winds caused by? unequal heating of the Earth's surface within a small area
Which of the following heat faster from the sun?- land or water Land
What is a sea breeze? When cool air from water moves underneath the warm air from the land causing a flow of air
What is a land breeze? At night, air on land is cooler. The cool air on the land moves underneath the warm air above the water to create a breeze.
What is a monsoon? Sea and land breezes over a large region that change direction with the seasons
What are global winds? Winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances
What produces global winds? Movement of air between the equator and the poles.
What is the Coriolis effect? The way the Earth's rotation makes winds curve
Which way do global winds curve? In the Northern Hemisphere-to the right In the Southern Hemisphere-to the left
What makes up the Global wind belts? Trade winds, prevailing westerlies, prevailing easterlies.
What are Jet Streams?? bands of bands of high-speed winds 10 kilometers above earth's surface
Which way do jet streams blow? West to East
