| hardness | the level of magnesium and calcium in water |
| concentration | the amount of one substance in a certain volume of another substance |
| filtration | the process of passing water through a series of screens |
| flocs | sticky globs |
| coagulation | particles in the water stick to the flocs |
| sewage | wastewater and the different kind of wastes in it |
| sludge | fine solids that settle out of wastewater during primary treatment |
| septic tank | an underground tank containing bacteria that treat wastewater as it passes through |
| leach field | area around the septic tank that the water filters through |
| drought | a few years of scarce rainfall |
| conservation | using a resource wisely so that it won't get used up |
| desalination | the process of obtaining fresh water from salt water |
