Cirrus wispy, feathery, ice crystal clouds that form at cold, high altitudes
Cumulus fluffy, rounded piles of cotton clouds that form at low altitudes
Stratus dull, gray flat-layered clouds that usually cover most of the sky
Cumulonimbus towering clouds with flat tops which produce thunderstorms
Continental climate a climate characterized by hot summers, cold winters, and little rainfall, typical of the interior of a continent
Marine climate a relatively mild climate moderated by the presence of a large body of water
Relative humidity the amount of moisture in the air compared to what the air can "hold" at that specific temperature
Air mass huge body of air with similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure at any given height
Front the boundary where different air masses meet
Polar zone the areas north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle which receive only indirect sunlight
Temperate zone areas between the two polar and two tropic zones characterized by warm summers, cold winters, and moderate springs and falls
Tropical zone the area from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn that receives direct sunlight all year round
Dew point the temperature at which condensation begins
Isobar map lines which join places that have the same air pressure
Isotherm map lines which join places that have the same temperature
Tornado rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud that reaches down from a cumulonimbus storm cloud to touch the ground
Hurricane tropical cyclone which develops around a low pressure area over warm Atlantic Ocean water north of the equator
Leeward the side of a mountain or object sheltered from the wind
Permafrost permanently frozen soil in the tundra climate region
Meteorology the interdisciplinary scientific study of the atmosphere
