GreenfieldAtmosphere
Layers of the Atmosphere
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ozone | A form of oxygen composed of three oxygen atoms bonded together. Ozone in the lower atmosphere is a pollutant, but in the upper atmosphere protects life from ultraviolet radiation. |
| Troposphere | The lowermost layer of the atmosphere; temperature decreases with altitude here. |
| Stratosphere | Layer just above the troposphere; temperatures increase with altitude because of the presence of ozone. |
| Mesosphere | Means "middle"; the layer between the stratosphere and thermosphere where temperature decreases with altitude. This is the coldest layer. |
| Thermosphere | An outer atmospheric layer where gases are extremely thinly distributed. It is also the hottest layer |
| Conduction | The process in which energy moves from a location of higher temperature to a location of lower temperature as heat. The material does not move, just the heat. |
| Convection | The movement of material due to differences in temperature. |
| Radiation | The movement of energy through empty space between objects by electromagnetic waves. |
| Greenhouse Effect | The trapping of heat by greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere; moderates temperatures. |
| Atmosphere | The mixture of gases that surround the Earth |
| Nitrogen and Oxygen | The two gases that 99 percent of Earth's atmosphere is composed of |
| Thermosphere | One of the two layers farthest from the Earth. The auroras, beautiful night lights, can be seen near the poles are in this layer of the atmosphere |
| Exosphere | The outermost layer of the atmosphere before entering space. This is where satellites orbit our planet |
| Earth's atmosphere | This reaches from Earth's surface to about 370 miles into space. Each layer of this serves a specific and important purpose in maintaining life on Earth |
| Inert Gases | Hydrogen, methane, helium, argon, and carbon dioxide make up the other 1% of Earth's atmosphere |
| Air temperature and air pressure | As you travel farther from the Earth, _________ and __________both change. |
| Stratosphere | Airplanes fly in the lower part of this layer because they can stay above the weather. The ozone layer lies in the upper most part of this layer. |
