Rock It consolidated mixture of minerals usually naturally occuring
Igneous rock A rock formed by crystallization of molten magma
Sedimentary rock The rock formed from the weathered products of pre-existing rocks that have been transported, deposited, compacted, and cemented
Metamorphic rock rock formed bt the alteration of preexisting rock deep within earth (but still in solid form) by hear, pressure, and/or hemically active fluids
Rock cycle A model that illustrates the orgin of the three basic rock types and interrelatedness of earth minerals and processes
Magma
Milten rock under earths surface
lava magma that has reached earths surface
Weathering A disintegration and decomposition of rock at or near Earth's surface
Sediment Loose particles. By the weathering and erosion of rock by chemical precipitation from the solution in water or from the secretions of organisms and transported by wind water or glaciers
Instrusive igneous rock Igneous rock that formed below Earth's surface
Extrusive igneous rock Igneous rock that formed on Earth's surface
porphyritic texture an igneous texture consisting of large crystals embedded in a matrix of much smaller crystals
Granitic composition A compositional group of igneous rocks that indicate the rock is composed almost entirely light-colored silicates mainly quartz and feldspar
Basaltic composotion A compositional group of igneous rocks indicating that The Rock contains substantial dark silicate materials and calcium rich plagioclase feldspar
Andesitic comosition The composition of igneous rocks lying between felsic and mafic
Ultramafic Igneous rock composed mainly of iron and magnesium rich minerals
Erosion The incorporation and transportation of minerals by mobile agent wind water or ice
Deposition a process by which an agent of erosion loses energy and drops the sediment in its carrying also the process by which water vapor is change directly to a solid without passing through the liquid state
compaction process by which sediments are squeezed together by the weight of overlaying minerals driving out water
cementation solidification of sediments by the deposition of dissolved minerals in the tiny spaces between the sedimentary particles
Clastic sedimentary rock a sedimentary rock made of broken fragments of pre-existing Rock
chemical sedimentary rock sedimentary rock consisting of a mineral that was precipitated from Water by either an inorganic or organic means
Metamorphism The changes in Mineral composition and texture of a rock subjected to high temperature and pressure within earth
contact metamorphism Changes in rock caused by the heat from a nearby magma body
regional metamorphism Metamorphism associated with large-scale mountain building processes
Hydrothermal solution the hot water a solution that escapes from a massive magma during the later stages of crystallization such solutions may alter the surrounding Rock
Foliated metamorphic rock a metamorphic rock with a texture that gives the rock a layered appearance
non-foliated metamorphic rock Metamorphic rock that does not exhibit a banded or layered appearance
