| Term | Definition |

| Acts | Large sections a play is divided into; can be further divided into scenes |
| Audience | The people that have come to watch the play |
| Characters | They are portrayed by the actors in the play; may include the narrator who gives background information and fills in details about the characters, setting, or events |
| Dialogue | The words spoken by characters in a play; a play is made up almost entirely of this |
| Drama | Literature that is written to be performed; a play |
| Narrator | The person telling the story; he/she gives background information, fills in details about characters, setting, or events |
| Playwright | The author of a piece of drama |
| Plot | The action of the story, or what happens, revealed through dialogue and stage directions; a play has the same elements of a story- characters, conflict/ problem, resolution, conclusion, and possibly a theme |
| Prop | Items or objects that are on stage during a play; always have a purpose or meaning. They can represent something, be referred to by characters, or be used by a character |
| Scene | Smaller sections within an act that a play is divided into; each of these smaller sections often has a different setting |
| Script | The written text of a play |
| Setting | Where and when the events of the play take place |
| Stage directions | Notes from the playwright that tell actors how to move or with what emotion certain lines could be read; tell how to set up the stage for the play; usually appear in parentheses/brackets and are in italics |
