TermDefinition
Allele One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome
embryology The branch of biology and medicine concerned with the study of embryos and their development.
Enzyme A substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
Mitosis A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth.
Biochemical conversion Biomass involves use of bacteria, microorganisms and enzymes to breakdown biomass into gaseous or liquid fuels, such as biogas or bioethanol. The most popular biochemical technologies are anaerobic digestion (or biomethanation) and fermentation.
Biological diversity Is the variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems.

Biomass conversion Is the process of creating energy by burning materials of recent biological origin, such as wood waste. Typically, biomass conversion is used to generate electricity for sale to a utility.
