Weather Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Evaporation the process in which matter changes from a liquid to a gas
Condensation the process by which a gas changes into a liquid
Precipitation the falling of liquid or frozen water droplets from clouds
Transpiration the loss of water vapor by plants
Air mass A large volume of air that has fairly uniform properties throughout, such as temperature and moisture content, at a given altitude. These properties reflect the region in which the air mass formed.
Jet stream strong air current that encircles Earth at several miles altitude
Warm front the boundary of an advancing mass of warm air, in particular the leading edge of the warm sector of a low-pressure system.
Cold front A cold front is defined as the leading edge of a cooler mass of air, replacing at ground level a warmer mass of air, which lies within a fairly sharp surface trough of low pressure.
Global wind the atmospheric circulation around Earth that occurs in predictable patterns
El Nino a band of warm ocean water temperatures that periodically develops off the Pacific coast of South America
Hurricane storm with strong winds and rain that forms over tropical waters
Tornado a funnel-shaped cloud or column of air that rotates at high speeds and extends downward from a cloud to the ground
Flood a situation in which water has flowed over the edges of a river
High pressure system A high-pressure area, high or anticyclone is a region where the atmospheric pressure at the surface of the planet is greater than its surrounding environment.
Low pressure system A low-pressure area, low or depression, is a region where the atmospheric pressure is lower than that of surrounding locations.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
