Words for Science Unit
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Compression | Stress that squeezes rock until it folds or breaks |
| Fold | A bend in rock that forms where parts of the earth's crust is compressed |
| Tension | Stress that stretches rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle |
| Shearing | Stress that pushes a mass of rock in opposite directions |
| Fault block mountain | A mountain that forms where a normal fault uplifts a block of rock |
| Focus | The point between the Earth's surface where rock breaks under stress and causes an earthquake |
| Seismic wave | A vibration that travels through Earth carrying the energy released during an earthquake |
| Epicenter | The point of Earth's surface directly above an earthquake's focus |
| Seismograph | A device that records ground movement caused by seismic waves as they move through Earth |
| P waves | Seismic waves that compress and expands the ground |
| S waves | Seismic waves that move the ground up and down or side to side |
| L waves | Seismic waves that move along the surface of the Earth |
| Richter Scale | Scale that rates seismic waves as measured by the seismograph |
| Cinder volcano | A kind of structure that forms when a volcano erupts silently |
| Shield volcano | A wide, gently sloping mountain made of layers of lava and formed by quiet eruptions |
| Composite volcano | A tall, cone-shaped volcano in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash and other volcanic material |
| Dormant | A volcano that does NOT show signs of erupting in the near future |
| Extinct volcano | A volcano that is unlikely to erupt again |
| volcano | A weak spot in the crust where molten material from the mantle comes to the surface |
| Magma | A molten mixture of rock-forming materials, gases and water |
| Lava | Liquid magma that reaches the surface |
| Ring of Fire | A major volcanic belt formed by many volcanoes that rim the Pacific Ocean |
| Island arc | A string of islands caused by volcanic eruption |
| Hot spot | A place where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crust above it in the middle of a plate far from the plate boundary |
| Magma chamber | A pocket inside a volcano where magma collects under the ground |
| Pipe | A long tube that connects the magma chamber to the earth's surface where magma moves |
